Autumn in Provence

Legendary fields of lavender. Wine and sunshine. Art and ancient history. Here are the gardens, towns and villages that charmed Van Gogh and Cézanne a hundred years ago. The well-preserved Roman temples and amphitheaters hold stories of the area’s rich and complex past. In this, our most luxurious and relaxed tour, we’ll spend four nights in the finest hotels in Saint-Rémy, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence. By day, we’ll feast on gourmet meals in glorious surroundings.

Day Three: Saint-Rémy

The triumphal Arc and Mausoleum in Saint-Rémy welcome us into this small town, once the home of 16th-century physician and astrologer, Nostradamus. We’ll visit St-Paul-de-Mausole, where Van Gogh was hospitalized the last year of his life, and where he painted many of his most famous works. In the nearby village of Des Baux—perched dramatically on a spur of rock high above the patterned countryside—we’ll find a mysterious mix of tiny climbing streets, age-old stone houses, and medieval ruins…
