What does it take to move a family out of poverty? Would you believe that in just two years your $50,000 could effectively move not one but five families out of poverty?

The Family Indepedence Initiative (FII)

understands the price of poverty: the daily grind of living on welfare; the defeat of those who save over $3500 only to lose their CalWORKS benefits because of those savings; the failure of our systems to encourage the family as a whole. FII has helped families entrenched in poverty to become homeowners and entrepreneurs and to work together to build community assets. As unbelievable as it may seem, $5000 per year for two years can move a family out of poverty for good…

Protecting Children’s Safe Passage

Children of violence grow up fast. Whether they’ve been victims of it or seen it up close, they lose their innocence too young. Negotiating the maze of services that exist for these children can be overwhelming for parents and guardians, impossibly confusing for children who must fend for themselves. These services may remain out-of-reach for children hidden in the recesses of domestic violence or the neglect that breeds crime. With the mission of helping victims of violence and making Oakland safer and more livable for all children and their families, Safe Passages aligns community resources to support children and youth at critical times in their lives…
